Naturopathic Medicine
A holistic system of medicine that addresses root causes of disease to bring the body into balance. Naturopathic medicine emphasizes prevention and optimal wellness, not just treatment of symptoms. Naturopathic doctors are guided by six principles: first do no harm, identify and treat the cause, treat the whole person, prevention, education, and the healing power of nature.
A typical visit includes a detailed interview, physical exam, ordering of lab tests and imaging if indicated, and development of an individualized treatment plan. Naturopathic doctors have extensive training in multiple treatment modalities, including: nutrition, lifestyle counseling, mind-body medicine, physical medicine, hydrotherapy, nutrient therapies, IV therapies, botanical medicine, pharmaceutical interventions, and minor surgery. Significant facetime with the provider means you have time to ask questions and feel empowered in your healthcare decisions.
Naturopathic doctors complete a rigorous four-year graduate program and pass two board exams in order to be licensed. Many also complete a post-graduate residency program. Scope of practice varies widely depending on state laws; in Oregon, naturopathic doctors can act as your primary care provider or as a specialist on your care team. We are able to prescribe medications, but we do so judiciously and offer natural alternatives whenever possible.
